So I had a chance to take another look at her again.

Crank was still stuck.

Drained the oil.

Oil contained a little water and some crud, but no obvious metal glitter.

Crank immediately discovered to be free.

Was able to locate the drive shaft coupler in a single piece properly installed. I was able to verify that both shafts rotated in unison.

I imagine I could clean the crank, add fresh oil, and she's run just fine, but the back of my mind says there has got to be something wrong... Draining the oil shouldn't have freed her up. The oil could not have hydro-locked the cylinders as the petcocks were open.

Given the above, what do I do?

Turn it over...
If nothing sounds bad, start it up..

My experience has proven to me that there are times when I musta made one "Mad" at me and they have to be let set until they get over it..! Seriously!!

Just when ya Least expect it, one will NOT Fire up...until it is durned good and ready to..!!

I cannot think of any reason a Bearing could have starved for oil..(like a 620 or 630 can)...I assume the oil level was ok and not on any unusually steep incline...

You ARE SURE you have no Gear Shifter problems..? The Detent springs can fail and allow the trans to slip into 2 gears at the same time and that will "Lock it up"...??

If that is possible, ya Better make sure that is Corrected ASAP, if not Sooner..

The transmission issue you describe, wouldn't having the clutch disengaged allow the flywheel to spin even if the transmission was locked up?

Found the problem - it wasn't what I was expecting. The starter motor armature exploded like spaghetti and was able to lock things up real good. I've sourced a replacement starter and hope to install it tomorrow!

Well that is a new one to me for a two banger. Do you suppose the starter did not disengage and oversped? I saw that happen to a Lexion combine engine once when dirt and dust got in the drive and it stuck engaged to the flywheel. When the engine started it was so noisy and powerful no one knew the starter was engaged and eventually exploded till the next morning when it would not start.

 @*&#$&*^$&@# !!!!!!! The starter I sourced is incorrect for my application. Apparently JD used various starter styles on the Bs and I got the wrong one. I'm in need of a Delco 1107942 or a rebuild kit that has "everything" - not just brush springs, brushes, and bushings...
