4430 Rear Axle Bearing

I have a 4430 that has been leaking oil around the rear axle bearing. Now it has started making a noise. Is this a project I can take on? I've removed and replaced engines in these tractors, split for clutch repair, and anything other than internal engine repair. I have a tractor mounted forklift mast or fel on another tractor. I have a service manual I purchased recently, but have found I get some of the best advice here. Thanks!

The oil seal is next to the INBOARD bearing.

Oil is not even supposed to get to the outer bearing, it is greased,

Typically, when the seal leaks it's because there's wear/damage/play in the axle bearings.

You should be able to do the job, since you have a service manual. Block, jack and crib SAFELY.

Once you get it apart, you will see what's actually wrong, and if there's any damage to the axle shaft (outer bearing sometimes "turns" on the shaft, for example).

Follow the instructions to replace the bearings and "set them up".

Replace the bolt at the inboard end of the axle, and the "lock tab" that holds the bolt used to set up the bearings, and keeps the axle shaft from pulling out of the housing.

Setting the bearing is the hard part. Deere now has you assemble it with soft balls that crush and them take apart measure then reassemble. I would tear it apart and have the dealer install the bearing and seal and then reassemble it yourself. A friend just did it that way with his 4020. Not a huge amount of Deere shop hours and it was done right as the mechanic had done lots of them. Tom

The wheel can stay on the axle,, removing the wedges will not help with the bearing replacement, the final drive needs to come off,, every thing goes off that end of the axle.

Sounds like good advice Tom. I may try that. Thanks to all who took the time to reply. It looks like I will have to jack the tractor up and support the cab at the same time. Wouldn't this be correct?

Got the final drive offf and carrying to a mechanic to replace the bearing. The manual I have said to support the cab on rockshaft with a 4x4, but I couldn't figure that out.

I noticed this shaft when I looked in where I had taken final drive off. Supposed to be there? It
