Steering Spindle

While rebuilding my leaking power steering on my 70 I came across this.. something ripped the edge of the spindle by the bearing. The bearing is still seated right and no gaps there. But would this leak if left alone or does the fluid not reach that low since all of the seals are above the cork and retainer?

Looks like someone used to long of a bolt to put ROM or wide front steering arm on. The two round marks on the retainer proves it. Just grease down there anyway, so pack bearing before install since the grease just falls to bearing from the square pipe plug you see in the picture.

That is nothing compared to what I have experienced and documented. This damage was caused by the bolts used to hold the roll-o-matic front end to the PS unit. When the wide front was installed the same bolts were used to make the connection. Review of the parts cat. shows the bolts are not the same length, one being 2 and 1/2 and the other 2". Cleaned it up, repacked the bearing and all is well after ten years.
