Power steering

Anyone familiar with a power steering pedestal re-build? I have all parts and ready to assemble except these two ?bushings? They were not on it when I took it apart, but the diagram shows them. They?re $50 a piece so I?m trying to figure out if they?re even needed ??

I am not an expert but I have read the power steering service manual for 2 cylinders probably 10 times as I am getting ready to replace the bottom seal in a John Deere 730. I am sure the bushings have to either be pulled out or driven out. Without looking I think the top one is pulled out. They are down in the castings for sure. I believe there is a tolerance given to determine if replacement is necessary. At this point I do not plan on replacing the bushings in my tractor unless it needs it. I can't remember if it is a dial indicator measurement or not. I believe I bought the service manual on ebay or from one of the reprint companies. I think it might have been around $30.

I need to order a manual I guess. My problem is these ?bushings? don?t even exist on mine... I wouldn?t have seen it known about them until I saw them listed on that diagram

emt3992,

I do not recall or have photos of those bushings you have circled, unless you removed them they are still in the pedestal. I am a strong believer in not fixing things that are not broken. Remember what the point (reason) of all this was in the first place, to stop a leak. You have done the hard part of this repair. If everything on these units were ever perfect why are shims used in some places and no shims present on others as I have documented with pics the differences between individual units not just read in the manual. You are on the home stretch now and I have confidence you will be successful.

Thanks Dan! You were a huge help keeping me moving with this project! I think you?re right, those bushings are probably pressed into the pedestal casting because they definitely didn?t come out with the shaft. I almost put it back together last night but right when I started replacing o-rings, I found pieces of a gasket with each one and had to order them this morning. Do you recall those? (#19 in diag) Looks like they sit in the grooves with the o-rings (20) ?

The bushings are there . If you measure the shaft and bushing as the manual says 95% of the time they do not need replacement.

emt3992,

I suggest getting two issues of Green Magazine where Dan Botzman goes through an early numbered series power steering unit, September 2016 and October 2016. Well worth the money if still available. October 2016 is still available. Call 402-643-6269.

Parts catalogs so show the bushings all the way back to the first "70".

"Gaskets", #19, are "backup washers" for the O-rings, and go on the side opposite oil pressure on the O-rings, top one goes above the O-ring, bottom one goes below the O-ring.

Here's the details on the bushings.

Thanks Bob!! That?s pretty much where I found the pieces of
the paper washers and where I guessed they went. Definitely
confirmed now. I?ll check the bushings when I get home they
must be there bc I never pulled them (I hope)

As far as item # 23 I bet it is there. They are metal and get the edge polished from all the wear they see from the vanes rubbing on them. Look super close with a magnifier you may see the parting line. IIRC they are hard to get out and hard to get in. I think I did them on my 720D. You can check the specs. for wear as given in the below instructions.
That upper one I think is different and is a metal backed bronze type ?

Forgot to mention, toss the new paper washers in a little bowl of PS oil a while before you are ready to install them, and they will flex easily for installation without cracking or breaking.

See the photo of the new bushing installed. When I did my 60, I made a puller and driver like the picture from the service manual. I froze the bushing in a freezer and it tapped in. Also used a red heat lamp to heat the casting to expand it.
