I have a neighbor that has a 3010 diesel 24 volt that is starting to cause trouble. We want to change it to 12 volt. What starter and where are you getting them as well as the price? Ebay has cheap gear reduction ones for $150. I used one a few years ago and the end of the housing broke and ate the teeth off my ring gear. Starter shop has a heavy gear reduction but it is priced at $305. Seems somewhat high priced. I have changed all of mine but I picked up starters off parts combines and auctions and do not have any extras right now. At one time I had a shop that would take the 24volt ones and rebuild them into 12 volt for less than $200.A 3010 can use the longer starter (4020) as there are no fuel filters in the way like a 3020 has. Thanks Tom.

I have been using an Iskra gear reduction starter that I get from my local rebuilder. It is a short frame design that will work on the 3020s with fuel filters on that side. I think they run close to $300 but sometimes cheap is not the right answer.

Try Ag Electrical Specialties in Racine, MN (near Rochester) 507-378-2101. A friend bought a kit from them to change a 70 diesel from starting engine over to 12V electric. I did the work and all worked well. I don't remember the starter and I never asked the cost.

They are very fast. Lots of folks take stuff there and wait while they fix it.

I was advised to get either a Denso or Iskra starter when I converted mine years ago. Im sorry cant recall where I bought them from.

I had a JD500 tlb which is just a 3020. I converted it to 12V and was not pleased with the starting of it. Did not seem to spin fast enough ? First I had the 24 volt converted to 12 volt. All that takes is a new field coils and a solenoid. From what I remember the armature did not change. Then I found a later model 12 volt one from a late 4020. I ended up leaving that one on it. I was not impressed with either of those options so I'd try one of the gear reduction units out there now.
The converted 24 Volt one to 12 volt got the drive switched and it now resides on the 4020 GAS tractor. Works great for that application !

I recently converted my 3020D to 12V. I just bought the kit. I'm not sure the brand of starter that comes with it but it is a gear reduction starter and looks like this kit https://www.ebay.com/itm/24V-to-12V-Conversion-Kit-John-Deere-Tractor-3010-3020-4010-4020/173442198585?epid=10030776022&hash=item2861f5ec39:g:g1IAAOSww5pbYF3q

Why are some parts companies afraid to post where they are located. I'm a "geography nut" and it is frustrating to not know where people or businesses are located.

The reference in your post is called Complete Tractor but nowhere in their site do they tell us where they are located.

I see that all the time too. I figure it is because when they sell you some junk you can't came back to them !

I wasn't saying anyone should buy it, was just referencing the pic of what the starter looks like. I actually bought mine from the place you mention but paid 50 more for it IIRC and the ebay pic looks identical to kit kit I received from the place you mentioned. I'm sure many of these aftermarket parts originate out of the same factory.

I am running a cheap gear reduction starter like you can but on eBay or dB electric for under 100$ I melted the stud that takes the power into the starter and the insulation that the stud goes through I replaced those parts and it?s still going strong so unless I get in a real tight spot I?ll put another one on

TY6713 is the old number for a nippendenso starter from a 4440, best starter around but $500+ from jd dealer. Just tried one on an early 4020.

I converted father in law's 4010 from 24 to 12. Got an ISKRA Planetary Gear Reduction starter #18483 from All States Ag Parts in Iowa. Easy fit and so far works good. I do like the fact that it has a threaded hole near bottom mounting bolt to attach battery ground cable. Was under 200 with shipping
