JD 2440 Problems

Hi new to the site and looking to get some advice on some issues i have been having with my JD 2440.

First i am having some problems with the alternator charging the batteries, i figured it was a bad alternator so i put a new one on it and it still is not producing the voltage required to recharge them when I am using the tractor. All the wires are hooked up and connections are clean and it shows voltage at the alternator. Any advice on what to start testing would be helpful.

Second I think the hydraulic pump is starting to get weak/fail. When i use the loader it shudders as i raise it up and the 3 pt hitch has started to fall after i shut the tractor off and come back in an hour or two. How can I test this is the problem and is getting it reconditioned worth it or just install a new one? The fluid in the tractor is a year old and so is the filter.

Thank you for any help you can offer!

OOh my....you are about to open Pandora's Box.....the Motorola charging system has a voltage regulator up near the battery, it goes bad as well as the wiring to it,, the hydraulics is a whole big issue,,could be as simple as a plugged filter or sump screen,,or complex like a worn transmission pump, or cracked oil lines in the inner pump area, the transmission pump is in under where your shifter levers are. The main pump is starving for oil, it needs supply oil from the transmission pump.

Welcome to YT.
As mentioned change hyd filter & check/clean sump screen. With hyd oil at operating temp look inside hyd filler hole behind seat for moving oil which indicates leaking rockshaft(3 pt) control valve seals. What type valve controls loader? If independent valve it possibly could have a blown internal seal on the closed center plug if applicable.

Its been a small ongoing issue that is progressively getting worse and its been through 3 filters since i owned it but i will see if cleaning
it helps. Thank you for the tip ill see if the hyd fluid is leaking around the rockshaft. The loader has an independent control valve on it.

Remove FEL control valve return line from tractor. Aim open end of return line in hyd oil filler hole, with both control levers or joystick in neutral position start engine & NO OIL should exit open return hose. If oil exits open return hose check for failed closed center plug internal seal.

have a 2440 that's bene in the family for almost 40 years. the alternators on these are small it take a long time to charge it up. on the hydraulic you need more hydraulic oil. Raise the loader all the up and bucket all the way forward than fill the hydraulic oil up to full this has worded on mine forever. You have more than enough room for the hydraulic oil easy fix.
