John Deere 2640 steering

I have a John Deere 2640 that runs and drives great for about 45min. After that you have to turn the steering wheel 1 time around before it catches. Once it catches it tries to correct itself for how far you have turned the steering wheel. This turns the wheels really sharp and you are going all over. Any idea what is wrong?

Need more information. Steering on 2640 is mechanical with hyd assist. Uncontrollable frt wheels indicates some slack in steering mechanism from steering wheel to frt wheels unless control valves in steering control housing have excess slack

The steering is like a belt when it is slipping. It?s like when the pully on a belt is just spinning and not catching the belt, then you tighten the pully and it
just grabs the belt. That?s the best way I can describe the steering issue.

You can turn the steering wheel and the wheels won?t turn. After a few seconds something will catch and the wheels will turn. It?s really scary when your
on a road and turning or trying to stay on the road and the wheels won?t turn. My thought was a seal or something being bad in the power steering, but
you said it was machanical.

I stated steering is mechanical with ""hyd assist"" which is different from hydrostatic steering that is totally hydraulic IE no mechanical linkage.

It's possible some shims are worn not providing the correct spacing on 1 or both of the control valve housings(key 15) or one of the control housings has a bad spring or non seating ball. Part number & price of 1 control valve assembly is this AR81610 BODY STEERING VALVE ASSEMBLY ADD 736.30 USD

Check that steering arm behind plug on side of clutch housing near clutch pedal is loose on steering rockshaft. This is pretty common on an old tractor that probably had a loader on it most its life. Arm will work loose and wear out spline on arm and shaft. DW
