Are the Napa and carquest Chevy 350 long blocks any good ?

I've got a carquest reman 302 in my f150 4yrs maybe 32000 miles no problems so far.

if your friend owns a parts store you should be able to get the engine at his cost, i would make sure its a new engine from Chevrolet, not a re manufactured one , the chevy engines from jegs, or summit racing are brand new with a warrenty , those go for around 2K, not a bad deal
