Heavy knock from JD-60 clutch

With the transmission in neutral, when the clutch was disengaged (pushed forward) a VERY HEAVY knock was heard. I immediately pulled the clutch back and the noise stopped immediately. When I pushed it forward again the knock sounded again. It sounded terrible, like a rod coming out or something!
The engine was idling and the knock sounded about the same speed as the engine turning over.
I put the tractor in first gear, let out the clutch, and heard no noise at all.
Everything worked perfectly from then on. No noise either in gear or in neutral.
Does anyone have any ideas where the noise could have been coming from? I grew up with two cylinder John Deers and have never known of anything like this before.
Everything about the engine checks perfectly, oil, coolant, etc.
All comments appreciated.

(quoted from post at 16:50:54 04/14/19) Flywheel is loose.
Ah, never thought about that side of the tractor! Hearing in my left ear is not so good so never considered that! I'll check it out and post back. Thanks.

Mark is right, flywheel is loose. The sound will seem like it is coming from the clutch side though. I went thru this same thing a couple years ago on my 60. If you continue to run it without fixing it, you will QUICKLY trash both the flywheel and crankshaft.

I agree with those that are saying to check the flywheel. Amazing how the noise from the left side comes out the right side. BTDT
