4020 gas ignition

I can't get my 4020 gas to go. It has the Pertronix electronic ignition. This is a 1967 gas that has been converted to 12 volt with negative ground. I have fuel and I have spark. I pulled the wire off coming out of the coil and it sparks pretty well against the frame when turning over. I also pulled a couple plug wires off and they spark on the frame too. I pulled out all plugs and wire brushed them - they look decent. I even tried a few ether squirts and nothing. It has a gear reduction starter and really turns it over fast but no fire? How can I trouble shoot this? Do I need to check voltage to the coil? Someone mentioned running a wire direct from the positive on the battery to the coil to bypass the switch? Should I try this? I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Did you try the plugs against the frame, and crank it checking for spark across the gap, if the tractor hasn't been run hard, idle's a lot the plugs go bad, which sounds like what's happening, not firing on either.

Wire brushing plugs is not a good idea but they shouldn't all be bad.
Plug wires sparking to frame doesn't guarantee the plugs are firing.
Pull some out to see if they are firing. Don't ground them near the
holes you could ignite gas fumes.
There's no need to check voltage if the plugs are firing. Check the
timing.
Are you sure you are getting gas into the engine? The plugs should get
wet when you choke it.

I have the same set-up on my 4020, & had lots of
trouble like you are having.

Turned out to be the original feed to the coil
had a resistance unit.
I had to run a new wire to the coil/ Pertronix.

Second thought---check battery voltage while cranking
engine. Should not be below 12.5 when cranking.
Are battery terminals clean---making good contact??

Forgot---is your carb equipped with a solenoid gas shut-off?
These can cause all kinds of problems. Check that the solenoid
clicks when ignition is turned on. Remove it to check if no click.
