PS Pedestal

Am I missing something or is there a trick to separating the pedestal? I have the pedestal lifted out, but can?t get the gear off the top so that the shaft will drop out. I left the bolt in and have been hitting that, maybe I just need a heavier sledge. I?ve tapped on the gear a little but don?t want to damage any of the gears.

If not worn/loose, the gear fits pretty darned tight on the tapered splines on the vertical shaft.

Keep trying, sounds like you are going at it right. Have you got the pedestal resting on the wood support I have shown in pics. Find yourself a 3lbs. short handled hammer. (if you think you need to use a SLEDGE, you are destined to break something). I always have the best luck using hard wood wedges and dowel rod (because I have them on hand) on the gear. Let the weight of that pedestal work for you and be patient . Do you have a map gas torch ($30 at Harbor Freight) to heat that gear ? Keep at it, I usually try several things before it pops loose. When it does come off note the number of shims under the gear (or lack of shims).

Notice the tools I use, hard wood handle, square 2x10 supporting pedestal , 3 lbs hammer, splitting wedge, all on hand at no extra cost.

Thanks Dan!! Yes i built a box and following the pictures you sent me from my last post. Everything but the heat part. I?ll start heating the gear today when I get back on it. Also just a little nervous about getting it back together and seated right after I put the new the o-rings in.

Dan's picture is good. Unless I am reading you wrong you are trying to drive the shaft out the bottom. In the picture the pedestal is supported correctly by hanging and every thing is removed from above. With all of the bolts removed and the main housing hanging as the book says the gear can be removed.

I finally got it apart! Had to heat the gear to break it free, then heat the casing and tap the lower half to get the shaft to drop. Looked normal, pretty gummed up. But I found this bent piece interesting.. thoughts??

DEERE calls it a "lock plate", nothing unusual about finding one in machinery that will get damaged if a bolt works loose and drops out.

gotcha. thanks. nothing came loose and no other damage. is it supposed to be bent onto the bolts? it does stick up a bit above the steering vane when flat.
