I recently bought a JD 850 and I can't stop the pto. If I pull the lever all of the way back and hold the lever the pto stops. When I let go of the lever it pops forward a little and the pto starts running again. Is something out of adjustment or broken?

My guess the reason pto won't remain disengaged is spring(key 15) in pto control linkage is weak or broken.

Some 850 early ones had a transmission driven pto later ones could have a 2 stage clutch giving you live pto. If a later one you could have stuck or misadjusted clutch.

Thanks for the info. My 850 is a 1979. I can't check for live pto right now because it is apart. Either way, does the spring that Tx Jim suggests sound like a reasonable fix?

Since your tractor is that old it should have the pto control that I posted a photo of so yes the spring in photo could have failed.
