520 not running like it should

Traded for a 520. Started it up yesterday and I have to keep the choke pulled out a little bit for it to run smooth. Have installed new plugs but haven?t installed points yet. Open for info as to what may need to be done to get problem corrected.

Before you do a complete re-build , take it off and replace the throttle shaft and outer bushing. That is usually the issue with these. And, yes, it sometimes does "show up" out of nowhere. Usually the felt seal dries up and lets the worn out shaft let vacuum pass and cause lean condition which is why choking smooths it out. Complete build is always best but if $$$ is an object, may try this first.

Good chance it can be a clogged carb. issue or even lack of fuel flow through shut off bowl. But I also learned that can also be caused by a bad condenser.

Where do you get your carb parts from.I have gotten parts from Roberts carb and the bushings they send are to short. They send a felt seal that suppose to go on the top but these carbs never had a felt seal up on there. They send one like 1/2 inch when it suppose to be 3/4 in length. It also if use will make the shaft stick?.

On those 2 bbl. carbs. I bought bushings and shafts from Deere. The shafts were steel and the bushings sintered iron. They held up way better than the aftermarket plated brass shafts and bronze bushings.
