4020 injection pump questions

This is a new model 4020. We had to pull the pump because the inlet fitting was leaking and when we tried to tighten it the fitting broke. I instructed my employee how to line up the marks and he removed the pump, reinstalled it and started the tractor. That was three months ago. I was busy driving my cotton module truck and was not present. Last week I started the tractor and it ran like crap and smoked bad and skipped. Some banjo bolts were loose and tightening them stopped the skipping. I checked the timing and it was way off. I had to pry the back of the pump towards the motor to line up the marks. It started great and ran good. I drove it around some to warm it up, then shut it down and tried to restart. It turned over slow like a gas engine with the timing advanced to much. The battery was new but with my load tester hooked to the battery when I Tried to start it the needle went to 6 volts. I got another new battery today and it does the same. I just checked the timing again and the movable mark was not quite up to the stationary mark. I retimed it again and the results were the same, started great and ran good but would not restart after 15 minutes run time. My question is if the timing is advanced will it act like a gas engine?? This tractor has a gear drive starter that we put on last summer and it cranked great. I may have a bad starter, just need some opinions on the timing.

What all was done to the pump?

If the governor weight carrier was replaced (JDB pump) it's up to the diesel shop guy to etch a timing mark at the correct location on the new carrier, and mistakes HAVE been made.

On the other hand, if nothing was changed there, and timing is "off" only the width of a timing mark, I DOUBT that is the cause of your hard cranking.

Is it possible your tractor is suffering from the dreaded DEERE "hydraulic pump is going into stroke during cranking" syndrome?
