JD 1020 Gas Fuel pump

Hello,
I'm trying to decide on which fuel pump to buy for my JD 1020 gas tractor?
It is leaking at the weep hope, so I know it is time.
Seems from what I see on the different web sites, there two different designs to choose from.
One has the two round towers where the fuel lines connect and the other has a more round dome on it.
From what I read they both seem to work OK with gas or diesel?
Anyone have experience or know the better choice on these?
If so I would appreciate hearing from you...
By the way, the one my tractor is the two tower design and I think the original?
It's been on there for at least 25 years since I've had it, but I did not buy it new...
The two tower shows up as:
Fuel Lift Transfer Pump, New, John Deere, RE42211
The round dome # shows as Fuel Lift Pump JDS3150
Thanks any help or thoughts,
Steve

When I looked at parts catalog PC970, I see two fuel pumps for a gas 1020.

One is RE42211, you described. The other, after subs, is RE43274. RE43274 had a glass sediment bowl on top by the parts catalog. Checking RE43274 shows it (and all pumps preceding it) now sub to RE42211. My understanding is the "bowl" type was/is supposed to be rebuildable; the "tower" type isn't.

JD Parts offers an alternate part to the RE42211 which is A-RE42211 (from A&I, based on my experience with alternate parts from my dealer, as JD has a stake in A&I parts). Since you appear to looking at aftermarket, the price I see from my dealer for the alternate is competitive with the JDS3150 (St**ner Tractor's part number) you mention. This site also offers a fuel pump in the same price range as well. Outside of possible clearance issues in a few cases as long as the pump puts out the pressure and volume needed shape doesn't matter to me and I don't plan on rebuilding one. (Who knows if the parts will be available by then.) So I would say stay with the type you have, it worked for 25 years and appears it is the type JD prefers now. JMHO

IMHO either transfer pump will be fine. I'd probably choose RE42211 because it's the type I'm familiar with.

INTERESTING point is that when you look the JDS3150 number up on several sellers' sites the notes say "Ports are 3/8 - 20 thread".
"Some applications may need different fittings, but these are not supplied by seller".

Dunno if this is a typo or not, but original fittings at fuelpump are 1/8"-27 MPT.

Kind of confusing when you start to look back and forth at these parts...
I have checked with A & I and it did transfer me to a shop about 25 mile from me, where I can get one...
I would think that even what the JD dealers now sell are actually after market stuff? Made in china?
JD does not make fuel pumps, so it is kind of a joke, I think...
The JD place that I called said $100.00 for the pump... I have not called back yet to try and negotiate a better price... but I do see green stores online at better prices... Got to watch these local dealers around me...
They see green big time.... <grin>
Oh, and I do not expect any of the pumps on the market today to last 25 years, be lucky to get 5... ha
Thanks for all the input from all you folks,
Steve

I know prices vary from area to area and what a dealer decides to give a customer for a break, but $100 is way beyond what I see at my dealer for the RE42211. The dealers are supposed to be able to get the alternate parts the catalog shows and the A-RE42211 is about half the OEM pump. It maybe the dome type researching it on A&I's site. There are a couple JD RE42211 pumps on eBay right now, one for 25 plus shipping, Others listed there are still a lot less than your dealer. You can always check the store for this site.

RE42211 will be a little under $60 at a DEERE dealer.

The A&I version retails for about $33.00.

If pricing an A&I at a nearby shop, be SURE to ask about freight before ordering. If it's going to be the (typical) $15 UPS charge, that brings the cost within $12 of just picking it up at a stocking nearby DEERE dealer.

To "Jim.ME", you wrote "JD has a stake in A&I parts".

FYT, as of December 1, 2010, DEERE became 100% owner of A&I.

Hi Bob,

I know -- they have a very large stake in A&I. Do you think the two lines might have the same spec parts in different packaging? Not a bad idea, catching some of the sales they'd lose to aftermarket, by having an aftermarket line sold over the counter. I have noticed some of the alternate parts are more than the JD parts.

May be I'm lucky compared to some. When I send a parts list to the dealer I use they will price both the JD part and the alternate part, for me to chose which I want. Then what they don't have, they offer to bring in on their next stock order. Parts usually come in a couple days, sometimes even the next day, on a stock order with no freight charge, unless I want to pay to get it quicker. I haven't seen them throwing out prices like some post on here that they got from the dealer they use.

At the dealer I am set up with, jd parts on a stock order = no freight, but A&I parts apparently don't come in their stock order delivery and the $$$ freight, somewhat evens out the lower A&I price with the DEERE price when shipping is figured in.

So far they haven't tagged me with freight on any part they offered as alternative part. They might not have been as quick arriving, like maybe 3-4 days (so far the second stock shipment) but, knock on wood, no freight charges yet.

I look at the prices on line when I make my list but I don't place the order on line. I have them to email quote the parts and availability, so if they say no freight if your order comes on a stock order, they've held to it.

I've got to go back and check these fitting sizes....
I had not noticed that... it would be nice to just bolt it up and no mods...
Thanks for that tidbit....ha
I stumbled across something a while back while working on our May Tag clothes dryer that you all might find interesting? I needed a part, so I a called place to get a price in Birmingham, Alabama... Got the price and was about to drive the 25 miles to get it. I happened to look at walmart.com,found the same part,at a better price, shipping free and picked it up at my local store 5 miles away. Somehow you can just just about get anything online through them, and it even tells you where it is coming from, what business...Usually at a better price and free shipping...
I can get either one of these pumps through their web site... One would come from "All States Agi", at the same price and shipping charge (no savings), but the other (dome shaped)at a better price and free shipping...
I guess Wally World is trying to get in ever game they can.... I have at this point ordered several parts, filters, oil, and anti-freeze type parts (that are not available in the store) at very good prices and free shipping... Sometimes you pick up at store and others shipped to your home free... Just kind of surprised me, that they offered all that at their web site.... All I have to do, is be able to wait a few days... Not Saying I will Do it on the fuel pump though.... But did look... I always check them now, just to see... <grin>

Is this the one with the two towers? You like?
Seems that number can take a person to either pump at times on the wicked web.... :)

Even though a fuel pump replacement should be a small project...
The research and help from everyone at this site, has taken me down several side streets... I have a much larger parts list of odd and end things that I need to do, to the old 1020....
Parts I didn't even know I could get for it... Like a manual load adjustment needle for the Carburetor... and get rid of the leaking solenoid shut-off setup, that has not worked right in years....
Found a way to either repair or replace my fuel tank sending unit... new gear shift boots for the trans... just to name a few...
Thanks folks,

If you order the JD part number from JD for a gas 1020 it is the two tower style. Replaced mine last year with that style. The pump works good. I had air leak issues due to rubber fuel line from the tank to the pump. Got that fixed up with the correct fuel line and all works much better. I did not get the A&I as my local Deere dealer had the JD in stock. I have been able to get them to order the A&I parts on their stock order, wait about 7 days, and not pay shipping.
