JD 40 Transmission

I have a JD 40 Tricycle with a noisy third gear pretty bad under a load I know I will have to split the tractor, but how much work is involved after that?
What will I be looking for a bad bearing or a bad gear. Is it fairly simple or will I be getting in over my head. (I am only a shade tree mechanic)
Is there a manual that will guide me
