JD-B transmission noise

My late model B has a clunking noise in the transmission, but only when I am in third gear. It sounds like a gear is missing a tooth. The manual says you have to remove the flywheel to get to the gear shafts. Is there a way to do this without removing the fly wheel? Can I do it from the other side by removing the the first reduction gear cover and clutch assembly? I seem to remember when I was a 0 or 10, helping my grandfather replace second gear in this same tractorm and we didn't take off the flywheel.

Also which gear would cause this noise only when in third? I would like to buy the gear now, so that I will have at the time I tear it down so I can do it all in the same day.

Pull the cover off the transmission and look what is bad. Not that big a deal to take the flywheel off a B. Easier than pulling the reduction cover off but you might have to take both off anyway depending on what is wrong.

You better take a look in there. My late B had the ball bearing go completely out on the right side of the sliding gear shaft (it rides inside the input shaft). It didnt clunk but it made one heck of a growling noise.
