70 Power Steering

Does anyone know if the steering pedestal is pressurized during operation? The previous owner said it leaks and wouldn?t hold up much more than a day but suggested maybe it?s just the top end.. and recommended that I fill the ped halfway to test the lower o-rings. I filled it halfway, let it sit for a day or two and turned the shaft a lot here and there, and they?re not leaking... but my concern is, if it pressurizes and then leaks I?m going to wish I pulled the whole thing off.

The power steering cylinder is below the reservoir and it is pressurised as you use the power steering. The upper part of the pedestal (reservoir) is not under pressure.

There's an O-ring seal (20) and a paper backup ring (19) in the casting above the vane motor, and in the casting below the vane motor, and the vane motor in between is pressurized during operation.

Ok thx. As I thought it probably will still leak then. I have all of the new rings just was hoping to not need to pull the ped off but without it running there?s no way to tell I guess and I?ll need to replace it to save time and a probable
leak after it?s back together then.

Does the tractor have a lot of dirt and oil build up around that area ?

Even the ones I've had apart that didn't seem to leak that lower o-ring was worn really bad to a flat spot on the side against the shaft and were hard. So I was glad to have replaced them.

Mike - yea there was a ton of built up oil and grease all around the base, all over the top and down inside the wheel rims. I was hoping it was all just run off from the top seals and by leak testing the bottom half I wouldn?t need to pull it, but as I suspected if it?s under pressure that?s when it will leak and I should just do the seals now

You may be surprised at what you can find when you go looking ! lol. You may even have some broken pins inside that cylinder. Measure your endplay of the main steering shaft before you take it apart. That way you know if you need to add shims to adjust the play when going back together.
