830 John Deere Start Motor

Hi, I am trying to get an 830 starting motor unstuck with no luck. I have put Marvell oil in each cylinder for a year now and still cant budge it. Wierd thing is when i first took the plugs out there was no sign of rust? Is there anything else that anyone knows about that could be making it stick?

Thanks in advance, clayman

Has it ever run since you've had it?

If not, a p.O. could have run it out of oil and seized it.

I have never done this but know of a fellow who did. . .He filled the cylinders with something with no luck. He removed the valve covers and did whatever to get all the valves closed. Then using an adapter
pressurized a cylinder to 120 lbs overnight. Did another one the next night. The third one was evidently the stuck one cause it blew down to BDC and the other 3 blew stuff all over. The theory was that the
air pressure forced the loose juice into every crack and crannie. If there's ever a next time, he'll cover the thing with a heavy cloth of some sort so when it lets go, the mess will be a little less. Good
luck! Let us know what worked when it works.

You could have broken rings (common for cranking engines) or broken connecting rod but usually you can still turn the flywheel at the inspection cover
with a screw driver. I have never heard of a good running cranking engine getting stuck from just sitting. Only lack of oil or no coolant have I known to
cause your problem.

. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the only hope for the starting engine is a long block exchange overhaul from Ryan Lind . 833-952-3010.
The good news is the price is excellent value to have a factory fresh starting engine .
Pouring magical elixirs into the engine won’t help.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I will probably try a few of these ideas and if nothing else i will do a trade for a rebuilt

Clayman.....Where are you located??? I have several used pony engines. I have worked on a lot of pony engines and have never run across a stuck one unless it was stored outside with the hood off and the air breather removed. If you cannot spin the engine over with a pry bar on the ring gear teeth on the flywheel...something is probably broken inside. If it ran 10 years ago and has been stored properly....very unlikely something would break just sitting (????)

So heres the story, 10 years ago my dad was working on this tractor at harvest time and never finished what he was doing. He was actually testing as there was no spark. Next spring i found a plug sitting beside the start motor so it spent the winter with 1 plug out of the head. Thats why i was sure it would be rust but no luck with pouring stuff in. I have tried the bar in the flywheel thing but dont want to getr to aggressive. I am in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada so not sure how to do shipping.

Blksmok, where are you located? i kinda need a couple ponys for some tractors that dont have one.

I do have one R pony, but no R tractor HAHAH

tlock....I am in west central Wisconsin, about 40 miles east of Minneapolis/St.Paul. All of pony engines are complete with starter, carb, coil box and transmission. I have a test stand so they have been checked out before installing on a tractor. If you find a stripped down pony motor the coil box is about $300, starter $150, carb $150 and transmission $200 (??). So, if it is missing those parts ...add another $750-$800 to hear it run.

clayman...did you check to make sure the drive gear on the pony engine transmission is not engaged with the ring gear of the diesel engine??? That is the only thing that will make it hard to turn the pony motor...short of having broken internal parts. Did the pony engine have oil in the crankcase while it was being stored???? Does the transmission still have oil in it?

Pony motor had oil but i never thought of the transmission being stuck or seized. Im thinking to check that i would have to lift the engine right out?

Thanks for the great information everyone. Just to let you know i got it free with a big screw driver in the flywheel and it turns over nicely. However last fall i was using the big flywheel, turning it back
and forth while it was engaged to the starter gear to try to unstick the motor and now that gear turns in both directions without turning the starting motor? Could i have sheared a pin somewhere?
