JD 40 differential

Hi, Pulled the back cover off where the PTO is on my JD 40 T last night to find the ring gear on the differential is done. I need to move onto the next part of getting the whole thing tore apart to get the differential out. What is the process for this? Wheel, hub, bolts holding the final drive? After I remove the bolts for the final drive will the whole assembly come right off or do I have to do anything with the bull gear? Any help/tips is appreciated. Thanks!

The pinion gear is on the lower shaft in the transmission, so you'll be splitting the tractor and taking the trany apart to do this job.

This is one of those jobs that you had best read and have a copy of the shop manual at your side. Unless you are experienced gear box mechanic, the IT will not cut it. Also, make a good support rig for the front of the tractor prior to split. Not just a pile of wood blocks. Safety counts here. The bummer is the trans has gears on 3 shafts and one of them is also the pinion gear shaft. That shaft/gear is matched to the ring gear and should be changed with the replacement ring gear. Well, supposed to be, for an old tractor, you could get away with just changing the ring gear. But if the pinion gear is bad, well..... I got a 440 that the previous woodchuck owner says he changed the ring gear. Anything above 3rd gear and just above idle, I know he never set the backlash. Tractor not worth fix. Just so you have some idea of what lies ahead if you under take that repair. Tip: make copies of the relevant pages about this job and put them in plastic covers to keep smudges off the paper.
