john deere 60 power steering issue

Im working on a 60 that is giving me some fits. The power steering will lock up occasionally when turning and it is not very predictable. Ive tried loosening the screw on the control valve, and that seemed to help a little, but it still locks up, and takes a few bumps the other way to loosen it back up. Has anyone fought this battle before and can give me a tip or two? Thanks for all your help.

Good chance the worm gear and housing will have to come off for a complete inspection. If some where along the line it had the "improved" design put on it there are several spots in those that break off and cause binding. If you have the older design some careful deburring may be in order. The centering spring and it's "ramps" get grooves worn into them too. Be on the lookout for miss matched parts too. Some early models had the relief valve in the pump. Later on it got moved to the control valve housing. I worked on a 720 once that was mismatched and had NO relief valve !

These are known to be finiky. Sounds like you need to set the clearances inside the box or at least check them at the same time see how it is wearing.

I just came across a 60 at a junkyard with manual steering. How big of a job to switch those out? I really don?t want to tear deep into it.

They can also stick when there's problems in the "vane motor".

Foreign material can get in there and gouge and jam, and the bolts holding the movable vane have been known to come loose and/or break, causing it to jam, or the vane or broken parts to jam into the housing.

Got one here myself that a guy put friction disk in the pulley and power steering hasnt worked since, dont know if he pushed the shaft out of the gear and the key fell off or what.Just now got the sheet metal off

Richard Duane of M&D Reproduction Parts will have the parts to fix your steering. 410-643-2899. I sat in a seminar he gave at Gathering Of The Green a couple of years ago.

Had a 720 once with same problem, drained the fluid out put in John Deere fluid worked fine after that, must have been some trash blocking a valve I guess.

I would think that replacing it with manual steering components would be as much work as repairing the power steering that is already on the tractor.
