low voltage

I have a 8760 with a 120 amp alt. I hook the tractor up to the air seeder , Tractor has auto steer, turn on the ac and can run it all day . Turn the lights on at dark and after a hour or so auto steer screws up and it reads low voltage . Shut the lights off and auto steer works and voltage reads good. If I changed it over to led lights I would have a draw of about 23 amps. Tractor has 10 lights on it.

. There are clip on DC ammeters to measure the actual amperage .
There is a real possibility that the belts are slipping on that little alternator pulley at full load . Cranking the tension down too tight will ruin the bearings . Finding worn or glazed belts and a worn alternator pulley are the norm rather than the exception .
Installing a higher output alternator and LED lights is the solution .
An “automotive” style alternator should not be operated continuously at more that about 2/3 of it’s “rated” capacity .

These guys are on the right track . Can’t go by looks, have to measure with a meter .

I put a new alternator and belts on it last spring. I can not remember if I put a new pulley on. Will check . Found a good deal on led lights so they are on the way. I am going to put new belts on again too. If that don't help I am going to do what my Grandfather did. Stop at dark. Horses did not have lights and they were tired. Thanks for the reminder about the pulley.
