1. Thanks tlock0331 for posting back on your 4320 results.
2. Congrats Tim S on your diagnosis.
I went back to the original post to review Tim?s words because I recalled at the time I did not understand them.

Remove and cap the diff lock line before you tear it down,,that will prove the diff lock valve is not leaking a bit of pressure to cause a bit of drag,,

Can you explain a little about ?drag?. I guess I don?t understand how the differential lock works. Thanks.

Paul

2510Paul, your welcome. I know i dont bring a lot to the table in terms of some like TimS, and TxJim, and to some degree, Mr Thinker, but i try to follow up with what happens when smarter people take the time to give a true reply. I will say that i followed up with a friend of mine, Don of Dons Tractor in bettie ks, and he said cap the fitting at the rear end and pull the line back up to a return line. If i understood him correctly that is. My dad came down today and checked out the tractor and he thought the same thing don thought. Unfortunately, other than hydraulic oil pressure engaging a big clutch pack, cant tell you much more than that.

What i have been doing is looking at the parts manual, PC1228, transmission case, 50-9, and i can see a couple different plugs that look like where i could return, without me drilling and tapping a large plug with the aluminum washer. Problem is, i know where the plug is on the case, but i cant find it on the parts manual - likewise with some of the plugs the parts book shows but i dont recall seeing them on the tractor haha

Forgot to include the drag. moving a straight line, it sounded and felt exactly like you would think a good solid 20 series tractor should. As soon as i would turn 15-20 degrees off center (straight forward) going forward or reverse, it would sound just like the brakes were getting engaged, and hard to turn, push the brake pedal some and it was louder, but you could turn. as soon as i would come back to center, it would go quiet, all gears sounded great other than that.

For testing, or to disable the diff lock 'til repairs can be made, there's NO reason why you need to return any oil.

Cap the fitting at the rear end, and plug the line, or remove the line and cap the fitting at the valve, as well.

It's fed from the closed-center hydraulic system, and blocking it off won't hurt anything.

Or, cap the fitting where it supply line for the valve comes from.

Thanks for compliment BUT please don't put me in same category with Tim as his knowledge far exceeds what I know. Members of this discussion forum are blessed that there are many knowledgeable contributors on this site.

When the diff lock valve lets a little pressure past it will only "Partially" engage the diff lock clutch, then the clutch plates chatter and try to engage, so the diff lock return linkage could be hanging up (the linkage going to the brake pedal) or the valve is sticky. No oil should be going into the diff lock when it is not engaged.
