Big ol hats off to TimS, who said pull the diff-lock line off and test it, and that cured the problem. everything on the ol tractor feels good. Put that in the win column!

SO, i was over at the neighbors shop last night with the locals, and the question came up....

lets say i took it into john deere with my statement that i think the spider gears are going out. They say okay, we will get right on that. Would they have done like TimS suggested and taken the diff lock line off and tested it or just tore into the tractor, get to the spiders and go, huh, they look fine, but oh well, put new in, put it all back together, and have the same issue...where does liability fall at that point? Say it took them 15 hours because of the cab. Do they go, well, its doing the same thing, new gears, now what....

How ugly of a situation could that become? I really dont know any of the mechanics at the close 3 JD shops, but it seems like the answer for a test was someone with much more experience and spent time on the older machines....just thought this could be an interesting conversation.....

Most of the shop help at the dealers
near me are "technicians" fair to
good on the new stuff, but lost on the
older equipment.Probably would have a
brain fart if they had to repair a 2
cylinder cause there is no plug to
hook a laptop into.

There is nothing better than common sense and experience.I know of two old school mechanics[ both had 20 years experience at JD before starting their own business] that can fix most anything and have more knowledge about the tractors that were made before 1992 than all of the mechanics combined at the dealerships 12 stores who are usually on the phone submitting a DE-Tech from a younger engineer who has never seen a 4440.Older guys like myself are still able and love farming even with all the obstacles and would prefer things were much simpler.

Well I suspect a trip to the dealer would of resulted in a HUGE repair bill you owed even if it was fixed or not ! Just like a trip to the doctor. lol.

That's why this site and the guys on it are priceless !!!!

I was told by a key accounts manager of a large JD network that they would prefer to not work on anything over 15 years old as they are obsolete. My reply was if a computer cant fix it most of their technicians would need a new job. Most every problem we have with our newer stuff is all electronic or sensor related.

Anyone who doesn?t spend the time diagnosing the
problem will not be very successful he?ll hit a few
times but he?ll miss a lot more those are the guys
who keep throwing parts at it until it?s sometimes
fixed . Never trust what anyone else?s work until
You test it for yourself any good mechanic no matter
where he works should be capable of that
