Spring inside shift lever housing

I'm restoring a 420w , I removed the shift lever housing and found a spring with one end broken off. Looked in all my manuals, show spring but not how it's attached. I'm thinking it goes around the shift lever and both ends attach to housing outside. Am I correct? Thank you for your consideration on this issue.Ron

IIRC, It goes around the shift lever and the ends of the spring hook into the where the little notches are cut in the side of the shift tower. It all stays down inside of the tower. If that makes sense ?

That's what I thought, is it to keep play in the lever to a minimum? The dirt inside was above the boot and probably was doing what the spring would do.

Is that the spring that gives you the "resistance" when trying to shift into reverse?

Not sure exactly why it is there ? I suspect it was to keep the shifter held in a spot it could not drift into a gear if running and parked on a slope ? It may also be to help hold it into gear because aren't there hook shaped openings where the shift lever sits in gear in the tower ?

I had a 9500 GMC with a 13 speed and that spring was gone. It took a while not to hit reverse. I don't like a 10 speed after driving 5, 9 13, and 18 speeds.
