Planter Tracks

New tracks installed on planter. I'll try to get better pictures in the field. Will be interesting to see if we reduce the compaction on each of the track and if the results will be measurable. Mounting saddle tanks on tractor later today.

GWIndy,

very nice! i would think there would have to be less compaction with that track setup, but were you really noticing that as an issue prior to track install?

A YT hi good is better than those center wheels. For a few years I had my farm custom planted with a central fill 36 row Deere. I forget the model number but it was one of the first central fill Deeres. Those center carrying wheels were heavy, tons heavy even with the planter folded out. I then bought my own planter and have never been sorry but that’s another story.

Our soil is a clay loam mixture. Slow to dry out in the spring and very easy to compact if its a little wet. We probably push this window a little. Started doing compaction testing back in 1980 with Landoll corp and John Kinsella from U of Illinois. We have visually noticed the rows beside each wheel track show more stress and using a soil probe with a pressure gage confirms more compaction. Really visual from the 4 leaf stage to about 14" tall when its stressed. Newer planters are just extremely heavy so this will help.

Boy, I should have proof read my post. Crazy auto correct, misspell one letter and auto correct changes the word to what IT thinks the word or words should be. I have to find out how to kick auto correct out of my life. A word with one misspelled letter can still be figured out. Not so when auto correct gets hold of it. I meant to say tracks are bound to be better than the wheels in the center frame.
