1948 John Deere D fuel lines

Working on a 1948 D, I purchased it partially disassembled, anybody have a picture or diagram showing how the fuel lines are routed? I"m using the parts giving to me with the tractor, only thing that is not original is the sediment bowl and its not lining up, and I think there maybe a joint missing in the fuel control knob

Here is a link to JD parts, item # 16 is probably the connector you are referring to, it is just a metal sleeve with two holes for cotter pins, New Paris Tractor will have any used parts you may need, Hope this helps....Tom

At this point you have to decide if you want to: have your tractor look factory correct (if you fear the correct police) or have a fuel shut off that works. Most of that valving for the tractor fuel does not do a good job of stopping the flow of fuel. After you drain 5 gallons of gas mixed with crankcase oil out a few times, well you will get rid of that original stuff. I am sure that a few folks will say theirs work good. I use a small 1/4 turn ball valve in the line near the carb. I can get a pix of it on my 47 D if you want. This eliminates the 3 way valve and starting tank but running on gas, do'nt need that.

George, You hit the nail square on the head.
I tried and tried to make the combination of the two valves in the original system work, it would hold up for a while but ultimately my fuel would end up on the ground, or in the crank case. I tried two different sediment bowls and two different three way valves, it wasn't cheap. I ended up using a sediment bowl like I have have on my '48 B, as it has worked well for many years. I fabbed a copper line, not a whole lot of room to work, to connect the valve to the carb, and it has worked well on my tractor.

I will try to get pix to post. One is the D, other is 40B. I get the valves at MSC, last order a few years ago, price was around $10. My D has the float bowl with the infeed on the out side of the carb, makes getting the shut off easy and can be seen to remind me to shut it off EVERY time. I rig all my Waterloo 2 cyl with these shut offs except if equipped with the auto shut off.

That looks like a good option, I like the small size, it doesn't look out of place like the larger hardware store ball valves some people use, Thanks for posting the picture.
