What would the typical uses have been, tobacco, sugar cane,???

Could have been tobacco but probably for larger vegetable acreages such as
cabbage, peppers, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, etc.

Strawberry?s trees any plant that you put in the ground after it has been started John Deere use to demonstrate them with cigarettes to show how gentle there transplanter was they started them out in Yakima then when they built them up in Canada they went from John Deere Yakima to just John Deere
