51 Model A oil from fanshaft

My 51 A has oil dripping off bottom of the ventilator pump and slinging out around the fan , since there is a grease zerk at the fan , I'm guessing oil should not be coming up the shaft. Is there a seal in the ventilator pump that needs replacing?

IIRC, there's a felt seal behind the fan pulley, and none at the ventilator pump itself.

I wonder if there's something wrong inside so the ventilator pump isn't forcing air (and excess oil) back into the governor housing?

I think yours would have the older (vane) design.

There is a ventilator pump problem. The vane pumps had 2 springs in them to hold the vane against the eccentric. Those springs are trashed.

There's a packing behind the fanshaft bearing, No. 18 on the parts diagram. But I don't think you should be getting oil up there in the first place. There's no seal for the rear bearing so I would look to the pump for the problem.

I think the fanshaft and governor will have to come off together. I have the head off my 51 A right now and was going to take the shaft off but I don't see how it can move far enough forward enough to get it off the governor.

The fanshaft and governor can be removed as a unit or remove the radiator to get just the fanshaft out. Choose your poison.
