carb gasket on a 50

hi everyone I have a buddy I work with that has a 50..it wasn't running the way he wanted it to so he had a guy rebuild the carb a year or so ago..at that time the guy said the bowl gasket supplied in the kit wasn't the correct one...something about no bevel on it or something...anyway he uses it on his farm and this year it has started leaking some around the bowl to body area...tractor will run good under a load but sputter around going down a hill or low rpms...he said he can shut the needle all the way off and it still runs...so my questions are 2 if it is leaking at the bowl then its probably drawing air and that's why the needle has little to no effect on it?...and where would a guy get the correct bowl gasket and is there a certain shape or bevel or perhaps non beveled...thanks for any help

The load side is supplied by 2 fixed jets in those carburetors. The big screw only comes into play under a hard load. The idle passages are hard to clean in those carburetors. I suspect that is the poor running issue. Is the bowel leaking around the nut on the bottom or the gasket at the top of the bowel?

IIRC the original ones Deere sold were a cork rubber composition type gasket at the top of the bowl. They may still sell them. The one for the nut are pretty hard material. The one for the nut goes on the inside. Many put them on wrong by putting them on the outside. DO NOT get too carried away with tightening that nut as the carb. stem is easy to break !

Does the 50 have dark smoke from the exhaust when it is sputtering? A leaking bowl gasket with gas leaking out, is not pulling air in at the same time. A leaking bowl gasket in and of itself should cause very little difference in the run quality of the tractor. I would be inclined to think the stack is dirty at low engine load resulting from a sunk float or problems with the float valve.
