JD Parts/Gaskets

I recently picked up all of the gaskets and rings needed for
repairing the power steering on my 70.. the gaskets the dealer
gave me for the top end of the steering pedestal match up
perfectly but are almost paper thin compared to the old ones
which are a cardboard/normal gasket type material. Anyone
else have experience with this? The dealer is saying to use
them and that they?re fine. I?m concerned sealing cast iron
pieces together of a pressurized system with thin paper. It
seems their opinion is that maybe this is new and the old style
isn?t necessary?

Well the ones where the worm gear housing mates to the pedestal are shims. You use them to adjust the clearance of the worm gear. If you need a thick one I make them from gasket paper. Then use the thin ones to fine tune it.

Oh. Yeah the original was a thick black cardboard type gasket between the ped and the worm gear housing, no shims.

On the JD 50, for the worm housing to pedestal match, there are thick and thin shims, like Mike mentioned. My parts manual says the thin shims are .005" thick and made of paper. The thick shims are .007" thick and made of rubber. Your 70 may be different.

For the worm housing to valve match, it only shows a gasket, but there is a serial number break making two part numbers for that gasket.

Some of the ones I had apart it looked like that. I just sort of thought they all growed together after all those years ? I like to save the old ones and measure them for a starting point with my new ones.

One of mine looked like this when I had it apart, think I counted the layers and replaced the same number.

Tried to keep it the same as when I took it apart.

Just remembered the gear on this unit had no shims under it, have seen ones that had several shims, be sure to check clearance on reassembly.
