Head Gasket?

I had suspicions of needing a head gasket with the tractor smoking a lot, tho more black than white smoke. While working on the power steering today I took a break and decided to pull the oil drain plug and see the condition of the oil. Not a real big shock but it was almost as thin as water. I right away thought well time for a head gasket. But... there?s a very strong odor of gasoline, not coolant.. still a head gasket??

I should add.. the oil is watery and dark black. I would think if it were a head gasket the oil would be tan or milky. I?m kinda leaning towards a carb issue or stuck float. ?? (yes I?m secretly praying I don?t need to do a head gasket, this yr at least)

Fuel transfer pump or carburetor float letting the crankcase fill with gas . Not likely a head gasket issue

ET is right with the oil powered fuel shut-off
diaphragms leaking.
Deere still can furnish them [4 years ago].

The diaphragms leak into the oil line & down
into the crankcase.

Makes sense... where are they located? At first I thought someone meant between the tank and the sediment bowl, sounds like on a line? Any direction would help. I have the schematic on Deere?s website.

Agree automatic fuel shut off leaking. Some words of wisdom (not mine) to guide you.

Automatic fuel shutoff

My JD 520 was acting-up and found that a stuck float/ float valve....no gas getting into Carb. With the drain plug removed from the CARB. there was no gas in the CARB. There was however gas getting to the CARB. as gasoline was flowing from the auto. shut off until the AUTO shut off was drained. The neighbours 620 had a problem so I used the below rebuild PROCEDURE from the "MACHINERY MAN"
You need to put all the diaphragms in place and really slightly tighten all the screws...then push the plunger down... after loosing the top locking screw...with this held down then evenly tighten all the screws...this relaxes the diaphragm and keeps it from stretching too much and tearing up after installation...most people don't put these in correctly ....same principal we used in putting diaphragms in the fuel pumps...there's a technique Procedure was originally posted by the MACHINERY MAN
Thanks MACHINERY MAN
