4020 gas conversion

There are 2 gas 4020 in an auction tomorrow. One is sycrno and other is a powershift. I have a diesel 404 and was wondering whats involved installing it in the powershift? I have done several syncros but never a powershift.

They fit the same way in both transmissions,,the ornery part of the Gas/Diesel swap is the throttle linkage,,it needs to go out the other side..

Should be easy enough to find one in a junk yard for the diesel I'd think ? Also think while the tractor is split might be a good time to access that dash support to change it ?

Yes that is the time to deal with it,, and there are a couple different versions on the linkage, I have been making a little lever that adds onto the gas linkage

I just did one over the winter. The absolute hardest part was swapping out the throttle linkage shaft under the dash. And I did it with no motor in it. Luckily I had a donor tractor that had all the parts I needed.

Couple other snags along the way were finding the air intake tubes. The rubber elbow you can get from deere, but the metal piping is very hard to find. Also, the dry air cleaner parts are really hard to find. I already had the under-hood assembly but not the pre-cleaner above the hood. That was a pain trying to locate, and expensive.

The hood is pretty much the same but I did find that the breather hole for the diesel is a little further forward than the gas breather hole. So I had to cut a new larger hole a few inches in front of the original. Also the fuel tank is the same but the fitting for the diesel return is just plugged off. I could not get my plug out so I had to drill it and re-tap, which ended up dropping a few shavings into the tank. So I made a magnetic stick to clean that up. I didn't want to take the tank back off, since I had just hooked up the fuel line underneath and that in itself is quite a pain.

It made a nice project but not a quick one by no means. Along the way I decided to make a few updates to the 404. I changed the fuel filter setup over to the square filter and I put the late 4020 intake manifold on it. That was mostly for looks. I took a few pics if interested.

What are the plans for the tractors after conversion to diesel ?
There are applications where gassers are used for putting around jobs and the conversion doesn't pay.
Just install a petronics ignition and a Zenith carburetor, it will run well enough.

Tim I like your reply. He defiantly has not spent much seat time on 4020's to realize the big difference between a gas and a diesel. I have one 4020 gas and three 4020 diesels right now and the gas hardly ever gets used. Tom

Most 4020 Gaser's are good low hour prospects for a late model 404/466 Diesel engine. At one time I had 6 solid 4020 Gas engines on the rack,,I couldn't give them away...

I would like to find a 3020 or 4020 gas just to see
how bad they really are ? We had a gas 6600
combine and it worked great of course that was pre
corn squeezins to

You are welcome to come and drive "Ingrid", and see for yourself how nicely one of the "good" ones runs.

Would it work easier to split the tractors at the bell housing, roll away the front half of the gas tractor, roll the front half of a diesel in its place and then deal with the throttle linkage and clutch/torque limiter issues? That would eliminate the need to swap out engines, radiators, air cleaners, intake air plumbing, fuel lines, wiring harnesses, etc., etc., etc.

(quoted from post at 23:57:39 03/23/19) Bob someday I?d like to do that . What have you
done to Ingrid to make her run right ?

She has the good cast-iron carb which was all crudded up when I got her, probably a dozen years ago, I thoroughly cleaned it and installed a new float (which I've had to solder once).

I completely disassembled the distributor and cleaned and lubed the advance mechanism, and set the timing a tad earlier than "spec".

She's still running with the Delco breaker points she had when I got her, along with a weathered distributor cap and crappy-looking sparkplug wires and the sparklplugs that came with her, and doesn't miss and sputter even when wet, blowing snow.

I have a new float, Standard Ignition breaker points, a NOS Delco cap and rotor, wires, and sparkplugs on hand for when she does need a little help.

The fuel injection kits are a lot of money from what I?ve heard correct me but I thought I heard like 20,000$

about $3500 in 2018 according to the internet:

Green magazine did an article a while back with a 4020 gasser port fuel injection conversion.
In rough numbers iirc she made 20% more power on 20% less fuel.
That new Chevy 6.6 direct injection gasser would make a do in a medium duty application. Somewhere around 110-135HP at 1800rpm.
I would like to see the part load and full load brake specific fuel consumption number in hp per gallon per hour.
Safe to wager that part throttle/part load economy would be superior to most diesels. The gasser would even exceed some of the low end diesels at full load.

Won’t happen now but if Tier V and Tier VI emissions are enacted by the next Dem majority . The small diesel will become economically unfeasible .
Europe is banning diesel in light duty applications such as passenger vehicles.
Spark ignition engines are still popular with industry and construction for use in fork lifts , man lifts , pumps, generators etc . Fewer problems with emissions equipment when used in those applications .
In the challenging 25-99 HP market . Kubota has an entire line of spark ignition engines to bolt in where the diesels are not reliable and not cost effective . Unless the tier IV or Tier V engine operates nearly continuously at or near full rated rpm and at or near full rated power . They do not operate hot enough to burn clean .
This ain’t 1969 with carburetors and points injection with diesel costing 3/4 the price of gasoline per gallon .
The social engineers in the EPA want an Utopia world with just electric vehicles . They are gradually working on the goal one step at a time .
