68 3020 powershift diesel. Spits sputters changing gears

Hey guys me again. Got the tractor back up and running. Changed the load shaft, resealed remote coupler, resealed 3pt lift. All that is good. I have a new problem though.

Now it has been sitting about all winter thanks to a lot of rain I couldnt work on it. No shed or garage to work in... Anyway.

Starts runs great for the most part. However I noticed today that when changing gears, mostly in the higher gears 6,7,8 the engine is kind of spitting and sputtering, it catches up but still. Acts like a fuel issue to me. I have filters on the way. Rebuilt injection pump last year and actually changed the fuel filters one year ago almost to the day. I did pull the plugs on the bottom of the filters and got some crap out of the first one. Was checking for water and crap. Does this sound like a fuel issue to you guys.

Also checked the wet intake filter, seems good. Going to change the filters later today just wanted to see what you guys thought.

It's possible the fuel transfer pump on side of engine is getting weak. Check for good fuel flow from tank to inj pump.

Jim, I forgot to mention that I replaced the pump when I rebuilt the injection pump.

(quoted from post at 09:44:44 03/23/19) In light of what Tx Jim says, have you ever availed yourself of the drain on the tank?

As far as I know the drain on the tank is factory. Is there a known issue and fix for something?

I believe the point Bob B is making is to troubleshoot whether there is a bunch of crud and debris at the bottom of the fuel tank inhibiting a good flow of fuel to the
lift pump.

Just checked, have good flow from tank. The cut off down there at the tank was a little loose. As a side note who ever had it before me did add a secondary cut off between the tank right near the lift pump. I am so glad, the one on the tank kind of sucks.

However since filters are almost here I just took off the old ones. I dumped what was in them to a clean white 5 gallon bucket. I will be replacing my filters more often for a while. It was pretty nasty. Once I get the new filters on and run it I will report back. Apparently I might need to remove the tank and do a good sand rotation. Might have to wait for winter again though. Season is about to start so I don't know that I can get it done now.

New filters and new fuel, still same issue. It will also do it when giving it throttle quickly. Maybe an injector is not spraying or not spraying properly. I dont think it has ever had injectors. Maybe its time to replace them.

Try running a good quality injector cleaner through it
. Usually injectors that pop and fart when the
engine is cold will clean up after the engine gets up
to operating temperature. If I go out and start my
truck when it?s really cold it?ll and try to give it to
much throttle it will miss but once it?s warmed up it
doesn?t

Just an update. I went ahead and ordered all of the injectors from RA parts on Amazon. WAY cheaper than JD at $24. And time will tell how good they are. But since I have access to an injector tester I figured I would test them as they came off. Here are my results.

Injector 1 = 2700 psi pop off - good mist
Injector 2 = 3000 psi pop off - good mist
Injector 3 = No pop off - comes out return at about 50 psi. If really pressing on the tester repeatedly and fast I could get it to slightly stream out.
Injector 4 = 1500 psi pop off - Streams no mist.

So basically I was running on no more than three cylinders. I went ahead and replaced all 4 injectors and kept the good two just in case. Tractor runs much better now, more power and no bogging down.

Oh I should also add that I removed and cleaned the tank. And repaired a [b:ad07420b3f]BUNCH[/b:ad07420b3f] of pinhole leaks in the bottom. I suck at soldering but I got them all sealed up I think. By the way that thing is kind of a pain to replace with the wet aircleaner and all.

So that was my weekend project.
