Hello to all,

Good to be back on the Board, and thanks to Chris for helping me w an old password.

Can someone pls inform me on how to polarize my electrical system? The MT has the positive ground too. Also, she's been in a covered/non-climatized shed and covered w a tarp. I am also rebuilding the TSX-245 carb as well.

Finally, if anyone has any tips for bringing a tractor out of storage [fluids, electrical, fuel-related, other], I would really appreciate your tips. I after I get her running, I plan on changing the oil, oil bath/breather, cleaning the plugs and maybe draining the TOM/hydraulics and replacing that fluid. Any and all measures greatly appreciated.

All the best,
tstex

The main thing to worry about is the gas in the tank. Your nose will probably tell you if it has gone bad, but I would probably drain it anyway. You should be able to look in the tank and see if needs to be pulled off and cleaned.
Otherwise, 4 years is not that long, relatively speaking. If you change the engine oil and coolant you should be good to go.
Let us know how it turns out.

I'd put 3-4 oz of very light oil or automatic transmission fluid in each cylinder well before start up to let it get down along the rings. At start up, I'd crank it with ignition off, throttle wide open until you have oil pressure. It definitely hasn't set long in terms of old JD's, but you want the odds as good as they can be in your favor. I agree with other suggestions 100%. Best of luck to you!

I would change the oil and oil filter. I had a rod bearing go bad in a 6 cylinder pickup engine because of a gunked up oil filter after first start up and it had only sat for three years so my dad thought. john

Thanks for all the comments guys...yes, my initial fear was cranking her dry re the pistons in the cylinder head - good thing there are only two. :) I was thinking of pulling her out by chain in neutral, then adding some fluid as mentioned and put her in 4th gear [w ignition off] and pull her real slow like just enough to move the tires...that gear ratio should not move things too fast and be able to get the lubrication going. Thoughts?

And 100% yes drain all the gas and add fresh....I'll ck the radiator fluid too..I used distilled water and antifreeze per book.

The MT is located WNW Of Houston by about 55 miles, so no real freezes per se...not long enough to do any damage at all.

Thanks again guys, tstex

Small jumper from the neg battery cable where it attaches to the starter to the arm post on Genny. Just a spark is all you need.

Clean the points, make sure no rats nest, smell the gas and fire her up.

Polarize the generator by using the jumper wire and momentarily jumping from the [b:654c4848f0]ARM[/b:654c4848f0] terminal on the generator over to the starter switch on the starting motor to get a small spark.

Take a look at the photo below of the jumper wire connected to the [b:654c4848f0]ARM[/b:654c4848f0] terminal on the generator on "Sparky" our 1951 Model M.

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much James and MMan - do I need to crank it, or just touch connect the Armature to starter?

thanks again, tstex
