Serial Number Pony Engines

With the introduction of the black dash 720 diesels John Deere started putting brass tags on 720 and 730 pony start diesels. Does anyone have info on where the serial numbers started and where they ended? An example tag is SE 11801. Assume the SE stands for "starting engine". These engines had a larger rear main journal on the crankshaft, larger push rods, different lifters, thermostats and a bypass on the water pump. Kind of "evolutionary engineering"... fixing problems that were common with the early pony engines.

Here is one from one of my extra starting engines (from a 720) looks like it reads SE 2024.

Do not know the answer to your question.

Take a look at the information below.

Note the serial number [b:654c4848f0]SE1000[/b:654c4848f0] as the starting number.

"[i:654c4848f0]Production: V-4 starting engine . . . 5,923[/i:654c4848f0]"

After adding both production numbers, there were 21,320 starting engines produced.

Pure speculation on my part, but if the starting number was 1000 and the total number produced was 21,320, then mathematically the ending number would be 22,320.

Hope this helps.

James,

Just a tongue-in-cheek nit picking comment. If 1000 was the first serial number and 21,320 were built the last serial number would be 22319 not 22320.

Thanks for all that you contribute to YT.

not doubting anybodies math...but nobody counted the 820, 830, and 830I. According to those parts books they started with SE1000 as well and dont show an ending number.

According to Mr. Thinker:

Both the 820 and 830 started with serial # 0000.

'57 820, 8200000 to 8203036 (63 tags were then scrapped to get to an even # to start '58 production)
'58 820, 8203100 to 8207080

'59 830, 8300000 to 8304223
'60 830, 8304224 to 8306891
( 830 numbers include the 839I)

Ok so the 720?s made in 57 didn?t have a serial tag on the pony motor? I have a 720 with out a serial tag on the tractor but my pony motor has a brass tag that reads SE 22394. Thinking mine is a 58 but not a hundred percent sure

I have four 20/30 series diesels and as soon as i get a chance i am gonna go look for their serial numbers and the tractor serial numbers, just for fun, i am gonna look at the 10 series just to see if there happens to be tags on them.
