1967 4020 Vacuum Indicator

Has anyone come up with a way to monitor vacuum on a 1967 4020 Diesel. Later models had a port and indicator light but I am finding no such port on this one.

Short of brazing or welding a port on the pipe between the air cleaner, oil bath, and the manifold the only posibbility I see is the ether input port. Has anyone used that port with success to monitor vacuum?

Ideas Please?

It is not so much a vacuum monitor as it is a service indicator for air filter maintenance. It will work on the paper air filters that will clog with fine dirt/dust to the point that you loose power, see excessive smoke, and if left unattended will collapse and allow dirt to enter the engine. With the oil bath air cleaners the cup will fill with dirt, but you won't notice a power loss or severe exhaust smoke as it will continue to flow air but will also continue to fill the upper part of the air cleaner ,not restricting the vacuum until it has clogged almost completely.A service indicator won't give you an accurate reading on an oil bath util it is too late. In either case the air filter should be blown out, washed or replaced when the service indicator reaches the red(paper filter) or the oil cup should be wiped clean, the upper screens removed and cleaned and new oil put in the cup. This should be done at every oil change (100 hours),unless you are operating in extremely dusty conditions in which case the replacement or cleaning should be done every 50 hours or less. If you have to dump the precleaner bowl alot you need to check the air filter more often.

Thanks for the input. It sounds like the oil based air cleaner is a very different beast than the dry.

I was looking at the parts book, it looks like the 4020 went to a dry air cleaner at serial number 119000, and it got an air restriction indicator. The 4020 I am working on has a serial number of 148xxx and it has an oil bath air cleaner. What am I missing?

What got me going on this is on the 4020 I am working on the upper part of the of the oil based air filter, above the cup, has what looks like leaches or blood suckers and quite a few. I assume they are accumulations of dirt that for some reason form these leach looking things. What is the best way to clean the upper section of the oil based air cleaner? I am not talking about those dish shaped screens immediately above the oil in the cup.

I think dirty/clogged air filter will cause a restriction IE vacuum BUT open air intake with clean filter on diesel powered engine without a restriction(butterfly) will not have vacuum.

Easiest way is to remove the air cleaner and steam clean it or pressure wash it.and if you think it is clean wash it again let it sit and drain for a day to dry out. I have had a couple of early style that have been re fitted with paper style filter assemblies

Do not go by parts book on air cleaners. I worked on a one owner all original 1968 4020 (square intake) and it had a factory oil bath air cleaner.Owner says it came new that way. I checked it real good and the tank and air cleaner had never been removed or changed. Tom

Tx Jim, you always help everyone with great accurate pictorial information so please don't think poorly of me or be upset. The best I can tell from the 4020 Tech Manual is 8" water normal and about 25" maximum. I believe that is for diesel, dry filter. You always have good information so maybe you have the 4020 tech Manual and could look it up and let me know if I am wrong. The numbers seems to vary if there is a pre-cleaner.

Again, you are so helpful on here as are others. I do not intend to offend you, just wanting to understand.

Best Regards,

Paul

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I returned the tractor to the owner today. It was running great so I assume what every leach shaped dirt collections I observed is not having much affect on the engines ability to get air. They must be as pointed out below, oil bath air cleaners are good right up until they are catastrophically bad.

The next time I get my hands on that tractor I plan to remove that Oil Bath Air Cleaner assembly and pressure wash it thoroughly as suggested.

Thanks again to all.

Paul

This is from TM 1006 covering ser# 201,000 and up.

"Air intake vacuum at 2100engine rpm with a clean filter element". 9 inches WC

Thanks for correcting my mistake. I strive to give correct information because I think "correct information" is very important for diagnostics & repairs. Sorry sometimes I make mistakes I guess from "Oldtimers". I welcome anyone to correct my mistakes with correct info.
Thanks again,Jim
