JD 4010 starter

I have developed a problem with my 4010 john deere starting. It has a 12 volt system and the Diesel engine is a 404 engine rather than the original. I have cleaned all connections and have new batteries when I turn the key it clicks once and then it is done I can turn the key and it does nothing. WHen it clicks it really draws the battery down. Any thoughts or ideas I think it is probably the starter.

If starter checks out you might consider adding a starter relay which will give more amperage to "S" terminal on starter solenoid when ign switch is turned to start position. JD offered a relay kit shown below.

I installed the kit Tx Jim suggests and it fixed my 2940 w/the same problem after starter checked out. It was less than $100 back then. Pic shows how I wired it up.(if it shows up)

Actually one could make up the wires & get away with just buying the relay for less than $30 even getting part from JD

Don't waste your money on that kit. The relay yes but not the entire kit. I bought the kit last year for my 2510 and if I remember right it was around $160. The only things in that kit I ended up using was the relay and two pieces of wire that were three times longer than they needed to be. I bought the exact same relay from Amazon for a different tractor. You will have to fabricate a base for it to mount to because the relay is new and improved anyway. It's not difficult though.
