The owners manual says that a John Deere 4440 engine should take 16 quarts of oil when changing the oil with a filter change. I have put 18.25 quarts of oil in and the oil level is still just below the add line. Tractor is sitting level. Dipstick is straight. Don't know what is going on. Any ideas? Thanks.

Is your oil pan aluminum or cast iron? If alum it might have an aftermarket pan with a larger capacity or a pan from a 4640/4840 was installed. I installed a 4640 engine in a 4440 with a bad engine, this might have been done also.

Check the part number on the dipstick if you just bought the tractor someone could have changed it to the wrong one . I had that happen on a 4020 once the dipstick In the new motor made it hold 5 gallon before it reached the full mark I didn?t know any better and ran it that way until the rear main seal went out . Might not be Your problem at all but It could be . Some of the early 24 valve b series Cummins had the wrong dipstick from the factory and they would hold too much oil I had two trucks with that problem

Which dipstick does this tractor have(finger hole or knob)? Spec's for knob type are shown below.

We had our 4440 since it was new, 1980. It always took at least 18 quarts to fill the crankcase and the filter. I always pour out 2 quarts out of a five gallon bucket and put the rest in the tractor.

One thing I?ve read in manuals for other equipment is the oil capacity is only an aproximate be sure to check the level With the dipstick . Another thing I?ve found if it?s a bit over full the engine will usually burn it down to the right level it should run at that?s how I found out that some off the early 24 valve Cummins engines had the wrong dipstick I?d fill it to the full line and the engine would burn the extra off finally figure out I had the wrong dipstick and it was actually a recall
