Later Styled John Deere A oil bath air cleaner

Just regular motor oil (tractor has 10w 40) in the oil bath air cleaner? Pulled it today when I did our Ford 8n and the A was jarred cherry red liquid.
 
Could ATF have been used because the air cleaner was plugged with dirt? The idea could have been that the high detergents in ATF might help clean the wire mesh in upper part of the air cleaner without removing the air cleaner to soak the assembly in diesel fuel or gasoline.
 
I was wrong, I ended up putting shell 15w-40 in both the ford 8n and the John Deere A oil bath air filter.

F does not contain detergent chemistry. ATF does contain dispersants, which have properties similar to detergents. ... We recommends that you keep the fluids where they belong: motor oil in the crankcase, and automatic transmission fluid in the transmission.

Forgot to change out the oil air bath cleaner when we got the tractor, we got the tractor back in September if 2018 and probably put 8 hours on the tractor. The tractor was down from the second week in October 2018 to the middle of February. The first reduction gear broke.
