'48 A Engine Serial #

Wondering as to which number on the bottom of the block is the engine serial number. I see one that starts with A and ends with R (assuming that is the part number) and another that appears to be an affixed tag that is stamed 238. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The AxxxxR is a casting number which crosses to a part# in the parts catalog. The 238 is the date the casting was poured.

Pete is right, there were no engine serial numbers.
That casting number is what you would go by as far
as getting a right match. Don't know if or how many
changes were made over the years but parts lookup
would show.
