I?m looking at a John Deere 2010 crawler for sale. They want $2,000, it runs but needs engine work. Any advice about it?
Thanks.

You will likely get more responses if you post this the Crawlers, Dozers, Loaders and Backhoes forum.

Those engines are the ones with the sleeves connected in a plate. JD parts shows the diesel sleeve plate for $2000+ and about $1000 for the gas sleeve plate. Those are not engine kit prices, just the sleeve plates. Expensive engines to repair compared to some.

If you plan to use it, you need to look at and consider undercarriage condition. Are the tracks, sprockets, idlers, rolls in serviceable condition? It would be surprising if it isn't 100% worn out, by the book specs. Whether it has life enough left for your use, you need to decide. Undercarriage work is not cheap. Then there are the steering clutches.

It depends how and how much you plan to use it. A 2010 could still do a good bit of work, if operated properly within its capabilities. They were built from 1961 to 1965, so it could be 58 years old now. Personally that is not a model I would go for, especially needing engine work. With what you could put into purchase and repairs of it, it is likely you could find a late model 350 or 450 series for that amount or a bit more. They are newer and often easier to get parts for. The later series had wet steering clutches which give less trouble for the most part. JMHO

It has been said "There's No Such Thing As A Cheap Crawler!" Thank You Stan Disbrow. TDJD you would be well served to visit the jdcrawler web site owned by Lavoy Wilcox. Just add .com and it will take you there.

More details are needed.

Is this a gas or diesel?
If its a diesel then stop right now. If its a gas then you can get parts for it.

I just rebuilt my 2010 gas a year ago. Yes the sleeve and deck is pricey. I was able to get everything from Reliance or Deere (both had everything) with no issues.

At one time I was looking at a 2010 forklift. Through research the transmission is the same as a 450 forklift. I bet there are a lot of common parts between a 2010 and a 450 dozer transmission and undercarriage, but one would have to spend some time going through the parts book to confirm.

Ok here?s the update. The tracks are good and the transmission is good. It does have a 6 way blade. The engine problem is that it?s blowing antifreeze it the cylinders. No water in the oil, it does smoke white. The head was just rebuilt, but it might be warped. The rest of the engine is good.
Thanks for all the response.

. The only way to make it work would be taking more tiles and effort than what it is worth . To bolt in a 2-53 Detroit from a 440ID . Belhousing has the same pattern. Or a gas engine out of a 45 combine .
