The lift shafts on my 401 B Industrial leak. Not the rock shafts' the ones on bottom of the dif. housing. Can the seals be replaced without draining the hyd fluid. Or is it wise to replace the bushings and shaft? I saw the page I a while ago, but can't find it now. I have been through the book two times. maybe too fast. Stan

They are "load shaft seals" and exist even if you don't have a three point hitch.

Unless you have some reason to believe the setup has been grossly abused, it's not unreasonable to replace the two seals and give 'er a try.

I will second they are called Load shaft seals. You will have to drain the hydraulic oil. The load shaft goes through the bottom of the sump. That is why they leak when running or setting. The seals themselves are not hard to replace after you have the oil out. The trouble is usually they are not the only problem. IF the load shaft itself is worn much at all new seals will leak pretty soon after replacement. The majority of the time I replace the load shaft, bushings and seals. There are several after market load shaft bushings that have an additional o-ring seal in them. I have found that on the Dubuque and Mannheim tractor they usually are not needed.

It?s pretty easy job takes a seals are only about ten dollars each and bushings about 15$ and the shaft aftermarket about 80$ I wish you were closer I?d come do the job for you

I have read where seals have been replaced without draining oil simply by removing 3 pt arms then sliding shaft far enough to expose seal then R&R seal then slide opposite direction to expose other seal then repeat R&R of other seal. When reinstalling 3 pt arms it's very important to remove side to side motion of shaft utilizing shim washers. As others stated if shaft has much wear it needs to be replaced to stop oil from leaking

I made a tool to knock the old bushings and seals out . It?s easier to go through the case and knock the bushings out you can also use the load shaft to knock them out if you?re going to replace it .

I just use a socket to drive the new bushings then the seals in make sure the flat edge of the new seal is to the outside of the housing or you can?t get the bushings in

Jim I don?t know how you could replace the seals
without draining the oil so you can drop the drawbar
support ?

SV
JD utility tractors such as the 401B didn't have a drawbar support such as rowcrop tractors similar to your 3020/4020. 3 PT draft arms attached directly to L/D control shaft.

From the information you sent I have a fairly good idea on the procedure. Where is a good place to get the parts?
thanks Stan

I get the seals bushings and shafts from John Deere. All states ag parts has a little better deal on the shafts but they are actually higher priced than John Deere on the seals and bushings .

(quoted from post at 20:13:13 02/19/19) I didn?t know that . Thanks you really do know
everything there is to know about John Deere?s for
sure

SV
Thanks for compliment but in my older age I've forgotten a lot. I was employed at a JD dealer for 21 yrs with 13 of those yrs serving as a dealer service manager.
Jim

Jim I always wanted to be a John Deere man but
my life goals have changed over the years I don?t
really want to mechanic full time anymore . Maybe I
could be a John Deere parts man but I don?t know
about that either
