I just bought a 45W hydraulic controlled bucket loader. The man I bought it from said that he thinks it was on a 720, but he didn?t know for sure. I?m going to put it on an A. So I?ve got a couple questions.

1. Will the brackets (that mount the loader to the tractor) from the 720 work on the A?

2. Can I convert the single-acting cylinder to a double-acting cylinder by removing the plug (see picture 2) and run a hose from the plug to the control valve (see picture 3)? My reason for doing this is oil storage.

3. I have the John Deere live hydraulics pump on my A. Can I run a hose from the pump to the control valve (see picture 4) and then out the other side of the control valve to the Power-Trol? (The pump is currently set up to run the Power-Trol.)

4. I didn?t get the brackets that mount the loader braces to the frame of the tractor. Where could I get those? (I could only find one online.)

Thanks for staying with me on this long post!

Sorry for all the posts. I haven't posted pictuers from my computer before so I'm still figuring it out.

Yes you can run the extra hoses to make the cylinders 2 way. Did that on my 60.

I believe you can go from the pump through the control valve and back. I'd honestly try to run from the pump to the control valve, to the powr trol, then back to the pump. You have more reservoir that way and you can use the hydraulics back there independent of the loader.

Bracket question, I don't know I'd have to pull out the books

For the brackets, it depends on how new your "A" is. Late "A"s (1950 or so) had rectangular rear axle castings, but earlier the castings were somewhat cylindrical. The 720 would have rectangular rear axle castings so the mounting brackets MIGHT be useable.

I have a full set of mounting brackets AND a "45" loader but I won't sell brackets separately. I would sell my loader complete. It has been on a model 50 tractor.

You are probably aware that the 45W is for a wide front tractor. My 45 is for a narrow front tractor. Also mine has double acting cylinders on the bucket raise/lower but trip for dumping bucket. Hydraulic cylinders were available for control of the "bucket dump" also.

I can get you JD part numbers from my Parts Catalog if that would help you.

Just curious where you are and what you're asking for the loader, I've been looking out for the bucket dump brackets and cylinders as well as a snow bucket for my 45

My A is a late style. I?m probably not interested in your loader but what are you asking for it?

Seems the myth about those being 2 way cylinders is still alive and well. LOL.
The cylinders you have are made to hook up 2 sets of hoses to for exactly what you need to do. Extra reservoir capacity. The seals inside of them ARE NOT DESIGNED for 2 way operation. They only have a one Vee cup leather packing inside. They will only hold full pressure one way and a little the other way but not full pressure as it will push the leather cup edge down that direction.

I'm not arguing but rather asking a question. If model 45W cylinders weren't designed to be utilized as double acting cylinders then why did JD offer 4 hoses for boom cylinders? I checked & both early/late style cylinders utilized the same cyl. repair kit(AC12250C)
Thanks,Jim

I thought I explained that ? On letter series tractors and the early number series JD models there is not enough hyd. oil capacity to run the loader. So the rod end of the cylinders act as extra oil reserves. Now when used on 20 & 30 series 2 cyl. you only use the rear hoses and put a vent plug in the front end. And if used on a new generation you need totally different cylinders so you don't blow up the low pressure tie rod style cylinders.
This info is all in the owners manual for these loaders so I'm not making it up in case anyone thinks I am. lol.

I'm not implying you're making anything up. It just seems strange to me that the same cylinder can be utilized as double acting for JD 2 cyl tractors in one instance but not all. I'm aware cylinders for new generation tractors were built for higher hyd pressures than cylinders for 2 cyl tractors

Interesting, I plumbed my 60 for 2 way and could tell it had down pressure, just not massive pressure. Now it makes sense. I've always called it down pressure

Brandon

The hoses going to the front of the cylinders are for extra capacity for when used on the older power trol. When the 20 series came out with the latter style power torl the extra capacity wasn't as necessary. Also, the cylinder piston cups are designed for one way pressure.

TDJD,
Watch your local auctions as I have been able to get complete working 45 loaders for pocket change just to keep the scrapper from getting them. Embarrassed to say how little I paid for this loader just a couple months ago.

45 & 45W loaders were never designed to be used with 2 way cyl's [down pressure & lifting of front of tractor] its
all most 100% guaranteed that frame will crack,, Family purchased 45 in "55'or"56' first yr,s made , Instructions for mounting
on lettered & numbered series 2 cyl's power-trol system ; must use 4 hose system & be plumbed to 1 way out lets [side of
power-trol] to supply enough oil to raise cyl.'s to full height ; Mike is right on. / ON 20 & 30 series 2cyl's custom power- trol
only one pressure hose used with breather plug...TDJD I'm sure boom valve on your loader is 1-way [single acting ] & should work
plumbing low pressure oil back to power-trol as in your pic's...live power pump will work good.. hope this is useful...

Each time you say that it makes me wish I could hit more auctions. The only 45 I've seen at auction was in Wooster and the bucket was rotted to uselessness

Brandon,

Some more "dealer" added options I have seen on those brackets as this tractor and loader sold at a dealer closeout auction. I will also try to post the option that got away from me, the one (only one) I am still looking for right now.

They do not raise and lower as smooth that way. When plumbed into the side ports of the power lift they work smoother.

My original message wasn't very clear. I do not have bucket dump cylinders, I only meant that they were optionally available from JD when purchased with a new loader. Sorry for the late response - I've been sick several days.

I'm in Southern MN. I'm asking $400 for the 45 loader, but I don't have the snow bucket, just the dirt/manure combination bucket. I don't have a way to haul the loader so a buyer must provide their own mover. It has all the brackets and braces to mount to a model 50 tractor.
