4440 starting problem

Got a 4440 that doesn't matter if it's cold or warm. I noticed that sometimes it turns a little while like 3 or 4 turns before it starts and does not rev up like it should. It just starts at an idle. Then the next time it will start right up and rev up like it should. Now now it has gotten worse and only poorly starts at an idle. I'm sure its probably a injection pump issue but before I remove it any ideas what else it could be? Only about 2000 hrs since the injection pump was rebuilt.

What is the cranking speed??? IF it has the two six volt batteries switch it over to the two 12 volts in parallel. It will crank faster/better.

IF you have good crank speed than start out simple. Fuel filters and air leaks. I have seen them suck air but not leak fuel. Especially when the fuel tank is low. Park it will a full tank of fuel and see if it starts better. If it does then look for air leaks. Those pumps do not like air.

early 4430 injection pumps had a cold start mechanism that mechanically reset the Cold start feature .most have been converted to hydraulic reset . 4440's should all have this hydraulic reset unless someone changed pump.
When the engine oil pressure drains away from actuater it goes into cold start mode. sounds like something is wrong in this part of pump. we had a pump on 4440 that would jump out of the Cold start too soon. it would blubber and die blubber and die. finally convinced pump guy something was wrong then got different injection pump and all is fine

. Measure voltage at the starter WHILE cranking . Even if it isn’t the primary problem , spending $20 on a pump destroker is money well spent .
