4240 follow up/auction

The 4240 with 11,000 hours but recently overhauled brought $17,250 at auction in Indiana Saturday. I didn't get it. They also sold two nicely fixed up and painted M Internationals for around $11-12 hundred each. This was with a big crowd.

40 Series will continue to bring a strong price, they are a very good model,,maybe the Best that Deere made. No electronics and strong components.

This one had the same 8 speed shifter as a synchro 4020. I was surprised because I was expecting a quad with 16. It was very low serial number, first year made I believe.

David the newer 50-55 series had a 15 speed power shift. It is a great transmission. The trouble I have had with 50/55 series is they had the early versions of electronics in the dash. They caused trouble. Also poor wiring locations of grounds and other stuff. In general some electrical issues.

While not fancy a JD 4440 Quad range is just dead dependable for years of trouble free service.

A 40 with a Quad Range is the best,,the 8 spd power shift was not as good, less working speeds but still dependable. There are a lot of 40 series in my area and I rarely have one in the shop..

I'll take a 50/55 series over a 40 any day unless I was on a budget. The 15 speed powershift and MFWD make up for whatever problems they might have had.

Oh yes if you want or need a MFWD they are better for sure, I was talking daily use 2 wheel drive,,

So was I. We had a 4640 and it was a great tractor and one I wish we still had. But it was also useless our hills. Just didn't have the traction. Wasn't a pretty sight when we had to swap it out for our 1950s 70 hp IH TD 14A crawler to pull our drills up our hills. Also, MFWD comes in handy on daily use tractors feeding livestock in the snow and mud. The 4640 was the last straight 2 wheel drive tractor we bought and now every rowcrop tractor we have down to our little 28 hp 790 has MFWD.

Another minor drawback to 50 & 55 over 40 series is the water pump that is powered by timing gears. The WP seal drain hole is very difficult to keep open so if WP seal fails coolant won't get in crankcase. I think that type WP was not one of JD engineers shining moments. I've had to install 3 new WP's on my 4255 since I purchased it in '93.

really we had the exact different experience, we couldn't get the 4840 to hold a head gasket, it would always go out working ground. that tractor didn't hang around but a few short years, the 8400 that we replaced the 4840 with has been here since 2001 and has only required normal maintenance and an occasional hose or something minor. the 8400 is by far mine and dads favorite tractor when it comes to the tractors that do the real farm work around here.

4240S is one of the best tractor made and combine advantages of quad, MFWD and 40 series dependability.
15 speeds PS is not near as dependable as the 8 speed.
