JD 450c transmission issues

Just got this 450c dozer. After replacing a hydraulic hose and filter we fired her up and right away she started moving. (Was in neutral). Push the clutch in or apply the foot brake she stops. Does not steer. No resistance in either steering lever. Will change gears from 1st through 4th. But the HLNR does not appear to make a difference (does not go in reverse). Any thoughts before I tear into the clutch plates?

Hoping there is something that needs minor adjustments or a tap with a hammer :).

Thanks.

Some questions to begin with for better clarification.

What hose and what filter did you replace? Did it work properly before you replaced the hose and filter? Did you check all the oil levels? Did you get the Technical manual (TM1102 for a C) with it so you have a guide to do diagnosis, before you "tear into the clutch plates"? HLR and steering control oil both likely come from the same pump so you may have a valve issue. If you had to unhook other hoses, to replace the one you did, could one have gotten crossed during re-assembly?

Many 450's and 450B's have been known to end up with 450C decals, when they are not "C"s. Are you sure yours is a C? If you are not sure, what is the serial number?

Replaced the hose that runs from the side reservoir to the front blade. I believe it was the supply and replaced the transmission filter.

Did not run it until after I had did that. Just got this machine at auction. I thought they transmission and hydraulic oils on this machine was from the same pump and reservoir but it does not appear that away. Do not have a manual yet, and will wait till I have one before tearing anything apart.

Had the same machine in Alaska but had friends there with more mechanical expertise, I can usually fix it but suck at diagnostics.

Pretty sure it is a c model.

Post the full model and serial numbers from the tag and I will check it for you. The straight 450's have a C in their model ID as well, and many people take that C to mean C series which it doesn't. Each series of 450 has their own manuals so ID is important. The serial number can be important in getting the right parts because of production changes.

Blade and attachment hydraulics use the front, crank driven pump, mounted under the radiator. The reservoir is the side tank. The clutch pump supplies transmission and steering functions, the transmission is the reservoir. There is also a suction screen in the transmission that needs to be cleaned at times.

Thanks.

As you thought yours is a real 450C. The model info was a different prefix on the straight 450's.

From the Parts Catalog introduction section, your model/serial breakdown is as follows:

450C = 450 C series
C = # 6405 blade 6 way, inside frame
317183 = 1979 build year (1979 s/n range 313948 to 340909)
T = built at John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works

The Operator's manual is JD publication OMT71338. The Technical Manual is TM1102 and the Parts Catalog is PC1420.

You can access the parts catalog free on line at: https://jdparts.deere.com/servlet/c...ountrySelected&country=US&language=19 or https://partsadvisor.deere.com/. Operator's and technical manuals are purchase items. The JD site for those is http://www.johndeeretechinfo.com . They are available printed, CD, DVD, USB, or download. You can purchased a copy of the parts manual there as well, if you want a copy, rather than use the on line one. Other places sell reprints of the JD manuals and you can sometimes find used ones on eBay.

You may want to post future questions on your crawler on the Crawlers, Dozers, Loaders and Backhoes forum. It might get more views from people with crawlers. Hope this helps.
