John Deere A oil question

I know this has been asked a million times, but does anyone know what oil the motor and tractor take on a later style John Deere A?

nowadays you can use pretty much anything as used in any other gasoline engine, from 10-30 to 20-50 depending on weather. lots of people use the diesel 15-40 oil also. its not like 60-70 years ago when 10,20, or 30 wt was recommended to weather conditions. oil nowadays is far superior to when the tractor was built. so use what ever you feel is best.

(quoted from post at 11:33:23 02/16/19) better clarify where your putting this oil??
Maybe I was mistaken. I thought it needed engine oil for the motor and hydraulic fluid for the transmission or does the whole tractor just take engine oil?

Engine and first reduction get the same motor oil. Transmission/rear axle get 90 wt. gear oil. Hydraulic is separate from the rear alxe. Doesn't look that way but it is. OP manual says the same oil as the engine but hydraulic fluid is better.

I have a A operators manual in front of me and it reads below 10 degrees F. S.A.E. 10-W, 10-32 20-W, 32-65 30-W, 65-90 40-W, Above 90 50-W. I would say Mother Deere was quite concerned about viscosity looking at that chart. If you use a multi-grade oil the first number is the real viscosity of that oil not the last number. The manual calls for S.A.E. 30-W in the hydraulics.

the first number is the viscosity in winter or cold. the second number is the viscosity of the hot oil. both numbers are just as important.

Use the travelers 85w140 in the gearbox. Good grade of multi-vis engine oil in the engine. 10w30 works, if you have low pressure, up it to 10w40. Find an oil additive to put in the engine oil. Modern oils don't have much zinc or phosphorus compounds like the old oils. EPA rules.

The traveller UTF will work fine in the hydraulics, I generally use HyGuard in all tractors so if it mixes, then no issue.

The engine should take a multi viscosity high detergent oil 15W-40 in warmer weather, or a 10W-30 if in cold weather. I would imagine the engine is gunked up, so get it warmed up good as much as possible and change more often than you think so it flushes the accumulated gunk out.

The transmission would be a 90W

If you use a Diesel oil you don't need to ads a zinc additive,it's already in there. There a phone number on the back of the jug, call them,if you still have doubt!

I take it back, go home and the tractor is filled with the utf
