Who runs a 955 discbine? How many
horsepower at the least would be needed to
run one? There's going to be one coming up
at auction soon.

Look for wear on cutter bar & cutting components. Also check amount of slack between drive gears. I'm not sure on HP requirements but I'll guess 125-150.

Blades are easy to replace, so don't let them worry you, but the actual gear drives for the blades are expensive. Fluid level in the cutter bar has two bulls-eye sight glasses, one on either end, but the cutter needs to be level for them to read accurately- fluid can all run to one end making it appear overfull while the other end looks empty. I end up draining mine and replacing with the exact amount before I start each season.to build my own confidence, then check for changes during the year. I would feel for play in the gearboxes and check the exposed gears for wear, under the side cover.

This is based on my experience with a JD 920 MOCO. I tried using my 5400 to pull it, then upgraded to a 4430, which makes a HUGE difference.

Well that is a 15 foot MoCo. In heavy material it will take every bit of 150 HP. Also they are not light. A 2wd tractor can get pretty light on the front end running one. I sold several of them. One fellow ran it on a JD 4640 with a full stack of front end weights. HE got along OK but had to watch when mowing any steeper hills when the ground was damp/wet. The mower would push him down the hill. He later switched to a JD 7810 MFWD and said it handled it much better.
