Hi All
My first post here, I just bought a 301-A tractor, serial # 301AD 331531T. How can I tell if this tractor is supposed to have a reverser or Hi-Low and what year would this tractor be? Thanks!

I have a 79 301-A in my shop now, the serial number is 303521. Your tractor has to be 80 or newer.

Like TxJim, I saw no reference to a hydraulic Hi-Lo. What is the dash marked under the lever? What does it do when you shift it? Or is this unit "dead" so you can't operate it to tell? Is there more to the story? This just seems like kind of a strange question at this point, to me.

My Hotline Farm Equipment Guide shows the beginning serial number for JD 301 - 301A models to be314230 for 1979 and 341902 for 1980.

What year is this tractor I have with serial number 303521? The state purchased it in 1979. Low bid would leftover tractors.

No later than 1978 by the serial numbers TomIn posted, might even be 1977. The year sold, or purchased, is not always the same as the year it was built.

New and unsold could meet bid specs, all depends on how the spec was written.

Thanks much, the responses have helped with determining the year. I only ask about the reverser or Hi-Lo because where the reverser lever would be on the dash, someone has installed a push button switch that is used to start the tractor, I assume that from factory the key switch is used to start the engine??

Get the casting number as TxJim asked. They were available with or without a reverser. Your tractor may never have had a reverser.
